Cléo de Mérode was born 27th September 1875 in Paris, as daughter of the german landscape painter Carl Freiherr von Mérode - who belonged to a famous belgian noble family "de Mérode". In the age of seven she began studying dance at the Opera in Paris. 4 years later she was already under contract with thte Opera. In this time, she was model for the painter Edgar Degas. 1896 she won the beauty contest of the magazine "L'Éclair" as the most beautiful woman out of 131 women taking part in the contest. In the same year she was modelling for Alexandre Falguiére - the artist created a naked sculpture of the actress, which was shown at the Spring Exhibition 1896 in Paris and caused a lot of furor. During her career she was on stage all over Europe, so as New York. She was dancing for emperor Whilhelm II and the royal Family in Berlin. In the high-times of her career, Cléo de Mérode was one of the most photographed women of the world. 1934 she was dancing once more in the Revue 1900 at the Parisian Acazar. Then she slowly retired. In the age of 91 Clèo died on October 17th 1966 in Paris. Her Resting place is to be found at the Pére Lachaise cemetary.
